Between the late 1800s and 1950s most of the world’s denim was produced in the United States. After World War II, jeans became popular in Japan because of denim left there by US soldiers. During this time, the US traded out their old narrow shuttle looms for modern wide looms. As Japanese craftsmen began producing denim, they purchased many of the old looms from the US and dedicated themselves to perfecting the art of weaving selvedge denim.

Today, Japanese selvedge is considered to be the highest quality denim in the world. Their quality standards and attention to detail has caused a resurgence in demand for selvedge.
